The Elephant ear is in the Araceae family, and less commonly named Colocasia. Elephant ears can grow large if they are in larger pots, however will be fine to remain in smaller pots which will keep the leaf smaller. If allowed to be in the ground, Elephant ears will spread and multiply. In the US it is considered an invasive species for this reason, however if kept in a pot they will only grow as much as the space will allow.

Elephant ears do well in a brighly lit room, however does not like direct harsh sunlight. If left in the sun for too long, the leaves can become burnt and will go brown in spots. This is easy to rectify, and will require a new space that is not as sunny. As the Elephant ear grows it will at times drop a leaf when growing new ones. This is due to the root growth, as Elephant ears like to fill up thier pot space. If the plant is putting too much energy into growing the roots, the leaves will only grow up to two at a time. This will increase once the root base is well established. Once a leaf droops and dies be sure to cut this off at the base with sharp tools, to allow healthy growth continues.

Elephant ears will tell you if they are getting too much water by expessing excess out of their leaves. It is best to keep Elephant ears away from walls as they can stain if the water comes in contact.

The best soil for Elephant ears is well draining, as they do not like to be left in stagnant water. Let the soil dry out at the top, however they do not like to be completely dry between watering.
